Assistive Technology
Wichita Public Schools is committed to providing appropriate assistive technology to students with disabilities. We are committed to training teachers and support staff on the effective use of assistive technology with students.
What Is Assistive Technology (AT)?
All students may benefit from AT. However, significant results have been seen with students who have the following disabilities:
- Cognitive Impairments
- Communication Impairments
- Physical Impairments
- Sensory Impairments
What Can Assistive Technology Do For Students?
AT devices, services, and strategies provide alternative ways for students with disabilities to access the same materials used by their non-disabled peers. AT devices, services, and strategies change depending on the specific disability being addressed. Accommodations are intended to augment, bypass, and compensate for disabilities. AT does not remediate but it can enhance abilities and remove barriers. AT should enable students to participate independently, with the least amount of human assistance, in the least restrictive environment.
Assistive Technology (AT) can help those with learning disabilities compensate for their learning deficits and capitalize on their strengths in the classroom.
